"What nature! What a temperament! "
It is with these words that Frédéric Lodeon, during his broadcast show "Carrefour de Lodeon", described the performance of Valentin Cotton.
Valentin Cotton began very early on the piano of the family home in Dauphiné. His parents discovering a marked appetite for music then enrolled him at the Conservatory of Bourgoin Jallieu, then in Lyon.
Progressing very quickly, a first meeting lastingly marked the young Valentin, the one with Bruno Rigutto; he went to study with him in his class at the Alfred Cortot Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris for four years. This was a considerable contribution, especially in terms of the assertion of the musical personality of Valentin Cotton.
The meeting with Michel Dalberto was then decisive. The great French pianist who heard Valentin Cotton decided to invite him to share the stage with him during a concert in Switzerland. Their exchange was very constructive and a great evolution for the young pianist. Conscious of the immense contribution that he could have on his evolution, Valentin Cotton decided to come to study with him.
In 2012, he was admitted to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris in the class of Michel Dalberto, where he studied for 5 years, and obtained his Master of Interpretation in this prestigious Parisian institution.
In parallel with his studies, Valentin Cotton was laureate of several international competitions. He won a first prize at the Musical Competition of France, at the International Competition of Montrond, at the International Chamber Music Competition of Kaunas (Lithuania), he was also the winner of the FLAME Competition in Paris and was nominated for the Raynaud-Zurfluh Prize.
All these awards led him to be invited to many festivals in Europe, such as the festival "Cap à l'Est" of Bratislava, Kaunas Festival (Lithuania), Festival of Pianissimes, Piano in Lyon, Piano in Valois, Piano à St-Ursannes (Switzerland), Rochebonne Festival in particular, as well as in rooms such as the Salle Cortot in Paris, the Frédéric Chopin hall of Warsaw University, the Philharmonie de Paris, the Grand Théâtre d'Angoulême, the Palais de l’Athénée in Geneva ...
Valentin Cotton also likes to share the stage, and to feed on his encounters in chamber music, a repertoire to which he pays a lot of attention. It has been heard alongside Michel Dalberto, Henri Dermarquette, Zachary Stains, Bertrand Chamayou, Anastasia Kobekina, the Quatuor Elmire, the Debussy Quartet, Clara Germont, and Jonas Bouaniche. It is also with the latter that he recorded a disc released under the label « Les belles écouteuses » in 2012.
2017 was an important year for Valentin. He was invited by « Jeunes Talents » to give a recital around the year 1905 (Debussy, Ravel) at the Petit Palais in Paris. He won the Young Talent Prize of the Music and Wine Festival at Clos de Vougeot. This distinction led him to play solo with the Orchester Dijon Bourgogne under the direction of David Chan (Concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera of New York) the 23rd Mozart Concerto, and to share the stage with Bertrand Chamayou during an event for Steinway & Sons. He also realized a long-term project, that of playing and conducting Chopin's first concerto with string orchestra, he did it in June 2017 in the Rémy Pflimlin Hall of the Paris Conservatoire. Later in the year, he was invited to come in solo recital and chamber music in Warsaw.
The year 2018 begins with his debut in concert at Radio France during the show of Gaëlle Le Gallic "Generation Jeunes Interprètes » (broadcast on France Musique) as well as concerts in Switzerland, country in which he is now installed and continues his studies with Tomasz Herbut at Bern's Hochschule der Kunst.
In September 2018, Valentin Cotton won the Schenk Prize and the City of Zofingen Prize during the Competition held by the Schenk Foundation and then in June 2019 the Tschumi Prize. Then, we see him perform in Europe during recitals and as a soloist with the Argovia Orchestra and the Biel Solothurn Orchester in Maurice Ravel's Concerto en Sol.
This year is also marked by his debut in Brazil, Sala Cecilia Meireles and in New York.
2020 will start with concerts in Switzerland; notably at the Festival des Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad, invited by its artistic director Renaud Capuçon.
